Job Description

MelonCat is an independent game studio in Jakarta, founded in 2021 by developers with international industry experience. We make anime-inspired games with rock-solid gameplay.

We're currently building Wishseeker, a turn-based tactical roguelite. Link to game: https://www.meloncat.games/wishseeker.html

Job Responsibilities

  • Define and own the game's art direction: character design, environments, UI, VFX, and marketing art.
  • Maintain a style guide and enforce visual consistency across all assets.
  • Review and approve all art deliverables; give clear, actionable feedback.
  • Work with the team to scope, schedule, and prioritize the art pipeline.
  • Partner with Design and Programming so art serves gameplay readability, not just aesthetics.
  • Set technical art standards with the team: sprite resolution, atlasing, dimetric grid alignment, animation frame rates.
  • Mentor and give direction to the art team.

Requirements

Must have:

  • 5+ years in game art, with 2+ years directing or leading an art team.
  • At least one shipped game title where you owned or co-owned visual direction.
  • Strong 2D fundamentals: anatomy, color, composition, lighting.
  • Demonstrated anime / stylized illustration ability in your portfolio.
  • Ability to art-direct through paintovers and written feedback, not just verbal notes.
  • Comfortable working in Unity: able to review assets in-engine, understand sprite import settings, sorting layers, and performance constraints.
  • Professional fluency in English, written and spoken.

Nice to have:

  • Animation background (preferably Spine).
  • UI/UX design experience.
  • Shipped a live-service or content-update-driven game.
  • Working knowledge of dimetric (or isometric).
  • Familiarity with Japanese/anime game visual conventions and their audiences.
  • Reading knowledge of Japanese or Chinese for reference material.

What we offer

  • Competitive salary based on experience.
  • Hybrid schedule with flexible hours, based out of our Jakarta office.
  • 5 working days per week.
  • 15 days paid annual leave, plus public holidays.
  • Unlimited supply of coffee in the office.

A note for international applicants: we're glad to hear from you. We can currently only support candidates based in Asia, which comes down to timezone overlap with the team and where we're set up to handle employment.
