Artist or designer commission: a series of panoramic scenes

The Horton Arts Centre, Epsom

Fee: £4,700 for two artworks, £7,050 for three

Deadline for EOIs : Sunday 30 August

Install: 18 November

The Horton Arts Centre is commissioning two or three panoramic artworks, inspired by the history of music therapy at Horton Hospital.

The programme began at Horton in 1955, the first of its kind in Europe, and the approach developed there became the foundation of the clinical specialism practised today. The venue is the hospital's former chapel, the only part of it left standing, and the room converted for music therapy in 1961 is its performance space now. The artworks will be displayed in the corridor beside it.

There is a rich seam of stories here from all walks of life — most of it as yet untold. Music therapy at Horton was led by pioneering women, often professional musicians of international repute, whose achievements have been overlooked. Its early history is intertwined with refugees from war-torn Europe, both as therapists and as patients, and in the post-war years the musical life of the hospital came to include reggae and sega.

The selected artist will be presented with rich visual, sonic and textual source materials.

Fee. £2,350 per artwork, inclusive of expenses — £4,700 for two, £7,050 for three. The number of artworks is settled with the appointed artist and won't affect shortlisting. Plus up to £500 per artwork for production, materials, mounting and installation, to a maximum of £1,500. Three shortlisted artists are paid £250 each to develop a concept; one of them is then commissioned to make the artworks.

Dates. Deadline for expressions of interest 30 August, 23.59. Three artists notified 3 September. Concepts due 13 September. Artist commissioned 18 September. Artworks completed 16 November. Installation 18 November.
