Background Painter

Job Description

Titmouse is seeking a background painter for a 2D animated series. The Background Painter applies color to the cleaned up background, giving the objects weight, dimension and texture, and creating mood and atmosphere to the satisfaction of the Art Director. The Background Painter works closely with the Art Director, Background Supervisors, and Background Design team team to ensure consistency and quality in the backgrounds of the project. 

Format: Hybrid/Onsite/Remote (We are prioritizing applicants based in BC but will consider fully remote applicants)

Length of role: September 20th, 2026 - January 2027

Compensation: $1175 - 1500/wk CAD, commensurate with experience and skill level

Work Location: 31 W 3rd Ave, Vancouver, BC V5Y 3T8

Hours per week: 40

Reports to: Art Director

*If the work for this position is performed within the geographical jurisdiction of the collective bargaining agreement, it will be covered by that agreement.

Knowledge, Skills and Required Abilities

• Strong artistic skills with an eye for detail, composition, and color harmony. 
• Solid understanding of color theory, perspective, lighting and shading techniques.
• Ability to adapt to different art styles and follow established style guides.
• Proficiency with Photoshop, Adobe Creative Suite, Google Workplace, FileMaker Pro, and MS Office Suite.
• Excellent communication and collaboration skills and the ability to work effectively with different teams and stakeholders.
• Ability to multitask, work in a fast-paced production environment and manage time effectively to meet individual and team deadlines.
• Excellent organizational, verbal, written, e-social skills and professional acumen. 
• Ability to work with limited direction and take feedback as tasks progress according to the schedule.
• Actively improve skill set and abilities by keeping aware of current trends, techniques, and art methods. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

•  Develop and paint background images that match the artistic vision and style established for the animation project. 
• Work on overlay and underlay elements.
• Accept feedback and direction from the Art Director and make revisions and adjustments as needed to improve the quality and suitability of the backgrounds. 
• Collaborate effectively with other members of the team; communicate and coordinate with the background and production teams to meet project deadlines and objectives.
• Efficiently manage workload to ensure timely delivery of assigned tasks while maintaining a high level of quality.
• Ask appropriate questions to understand and complete assignments and tasks on schedule.
• Engage in an open dialogue with production management on any potential roadblocks or concerns in delivering assignments on time.
• Support & maintain the artistic vision of all phases of the series from pre-production through final episode delivery.
• Other duties as assigned.
