About One Man Studio

We make videogames. We partner with major AAA teams to help translate artistic vision into shipped games.

The Role

Create compelling environment concepts that define locations, world spaces, mood, and visual identity. You’ll work closely with Art Direction, Environment Art, Level Design, Lighting, and other disciplines to develop concepts that are not only beautiful, but clear, usable, and grounded in production needs.

This is a senior role for someone who can take broad direction, explore strong visual solutions, and help guide environments from early ideation through production handoff.

What You’ll Do

  • Environment concept creation: Design locations, interiors, exteriors, landmarks, props, set pieces, and world spaces that support the game’s artistic direction.
  • Worldbuilding: Establish mood, scale, architectural language, material palettes, environmental motifs, and visual storytelling.
  • Narrative & gameplay support: Create concepts that reflect the story, function, and gameplay intent of a space.
  • Production handoff: Provide paintovers, callouts, breakdowns, and clear visual guidance for Environment Artists and other production teams.
  • Visual development: Explore lighting, weather, time of day, composition, and atmosphere to define the tone of key locations.
  • Cross-discipline collaboration: Work with Art Direction, Level Design, Environment Art, Lighting, VFX, and Tech Art to solve visual and production challenges.
  • Iteration: Respond well to feedback, explore alternatives quickly, and keep concepts aligned with creative and technical constraints.
  • Visual consistency: Help maintain style, scale, and world logic across locations and asset families.
  • Mentorship: Give thoughtful feedback and support less-experienced artists where needed.

Requirements

  • 5+ years as a Concept Artist, with strong specialization in environment concept art.
  • At least one shipped AA/AAA title or equivalent large-scale game project.
  • Strong portfolio showing high-quality environments, worldbuilding, composition, lighting, perspective, scale, and visual storytelling.
  • Excellent understanding of architecture, spatial design, materials, atmosphere, color, and mood.
  • Comfortable creating both polished key art and practical production concepts.
  • Strong ability to communicate ideas clearly through sketches, paintovers, callouts, and breakdowns.
  • Confident working from feedback and collaborating with multiple disciplines.
  • Strong digital painting skills using industry-standard tools such as Photoshop, Procreate, or equivalent.
  • Familiarity with 3D blockouts, kitbashing, or paintover workflows to support believable spaces and production accuracy.

Nice to Have

  • Experience working on large-scale, open-world, narrative, or highly cinematic environments.
  • Familiarity with game production pipelines and real-time constraints.
  • Experience creating concepts from Level Design blockouts.
  • Ability to support style guides, mood boards, visual targets, and location briefs.
  • 3D workflow knowledge using Blender, Unreal, SketchUp, Maya, or similar tools.

Portfolio

Show environment-focused concept work with succinct breakdowns: early sketches, mood exploration, keyframes, architectural studies, production callouts, paintovers, and final concepts. We want to see how you think, not just the finished image.

What Success Looks Like

  • Concepts clearly guide production and reduce ambiguity for the 3D team.
  • Locations feel coherent, memorable, and aligned with the game’s visual direction.
  • Environment ideas support both storytelling and gameplay.
  • Production teams can use your work without guesswork.
  • You help raise the visual quality and consistency of the game world.
