Job Description

Peekaboo Animation is growing, and we're looking for a talented, passionate Background Layout Artist to join our creative team. You'll be working on our exciting new series The Triplets, helping us craft high-quality, engaging content for kids and youth audiences worldwide.

We're seeking artists who want to join us in our mission to create animation that is fun and entertaining while carrying strong positive values. We believe in compelling stories and beautiful design, and we want you to be part of it.

PLEASE NOTE: This role requires you to be a freelancer based in the EU at the time of application. No exceptions will be made.

About Peekaboo Animation

Peekaboo Animation was born as a 2D boutique studio with the aim of delivering fresh, quality content aimed mainly at kids and youth, mixing entertainment and fun with strong social values. We create, develop and produce our own ideas, and give a voice to young creators who share our vision and passion for animation. We believe in compelling stories and attractive visual design that offer a positive view of the world. We like to say we help kids enjoy their childhood through our projects.

About the Role

As a BG Layout Artist, your primary responsibility will be to build the visual stage where our stories come to life, crafting backgrounds that are accurate, expressive and on-model across every episode. You'll work closely with the BG Layout Lead and Supervisor and the Art Director to translate storyboards and location designs into layouts that set the tone for each scene. We value proactive, solution-oriented mindsets.

If you're an artist who loves a creative challenge and collaborates well within a team, you'll fit right in!

What You'll Be Doing

  • Create high-quality background layouts in line and color, following the visual style and standards established by the Art Director and the BG Layout Lead.
  • Interpret storyboards and layout breakdowns to build accurate staging, perspective and composition for each scene.
  • Incorporate notes and feedback from the BG Layout Lead and Supervisor, iterating to reach final approval.
  • Ensure continuity and consistency of environments, assets and set pieces across sequences and episodes.
  • Maintain proper file organization, naming conventions and version control within our production tracking software (ShotGrid / Flow Production Tracking) and server.
  • Flag staging, perspective or continuity issues early so they can be solved before they reach later stages of the pipeline.
  • Meet episodic deadlines and quotas while keeping a high standard.

What We're Looking For

  • Professional studio experience as a BG Layout Artist.
  • Proficiency in 2D animation shows animated using Toon Boom Harmony.
  • Expert-level experience in Adobe Photoshop, with solid drawing skills and the ability to adapt to different visual styles.
  • A solid understanding of perspective, composition, staging and cinematic language.
  • Excellent time management skills and the ability to work efficiently to meet deadlines.
  • A keen eye for detail and a creative approach to problem-solving.
  • Experience with production tracking software like ShotGrid (formerly Shotgun) is a plus.
  • Working proficiency in English and Spanish; Catalan is a plus.
  • Must be a freelancer based in the EU.

Estimated timeline: ASAP to July 2026.

What We'll Offer You

When you join Peekaboo Animation, you become part of a passionate, collaborative team dedicated to making a positive impact through storytelling. Our studio in the heart of Gràcia is a hub of creativity where your voice and ideas are valued.

You'll be joining a dynamic, multi-faceted studio with global reach. Beyond creating our own beloved series, which have been seen in over 140 countries, we're deeply involved in the animation ecosystem. We act as executive producers for partners, helping bring their projects to market, and we run a robust distribution arm to make sure great content finds its audience. Our work also extends to publishing, where we've illustrated nearly 200 children's books. This diversity makes for a stable and exciting environment where you can grow.

We offer a competitive rate, a supportive work environment, and the chance to contribute to meaningful projects that captivate and inspire young audiences around the world.

If this sounds like the kind of studio you'd like to be part of, what are you waiting for?

Please note: Applicants must be freelancers based in the EU with written and spoken proficiency in Spanish. No exceptions will be made, and applications not meeting these criteria will be automatically rejected.
