2D FX Artist

Job Description

This is an independent contract role; candidates must have own workstation, adequate internet access, and necessary software access. If needed a software license may be provided during the contract to insure appropriate software version is used for the project.

Role Synopsis:

The 2D FX Artist is responsible for designing and executing stylized visual effects that enhance storytelling and integrate seamlessly within the production pipeline. This role bridges creative and technical execution, collaborating across departments to deliver high-quality FX within schedule and technical constraints.

Job Duties:

• Design, animate, and composite 2D FX elements using After Effects in alignment with the series style (anime-inspired)
• Create and manage assets for use in compositing, including particles, lighting effects, and environmental FX
• Collaborate with the animation team to ensure seamless visual integration
• Interpret and implement the Director’s vision while maintaining technical and artistic continuity
• Troubleshoot creative and technical issues related to FX and compositing workflows
• Ensure all FX assets meet pipeline requirements, naming conventions, and delivery standards
• Work closely with Dir of Development  to meet deadlines, quotas, and delivery targets
• Review and iterate on FX work based on Director feedback
• Communicate proactively with team regarding workload, timelines, and potential risks
• Organize and manage files and project assets efficiently
• Participate in reviews and production meetings as required
• Contribute to a positive team environment aligned with Kickstart’s core values
• Interact respectfully and professionally with colleagues, partners, and clients
• Additional duties as requested

Requirements

• 3+ years industry experience in 2D FX and compositing or motion graphics
• Advanced proficiency in After Effects
• Strong understanding of FX principles (timing, physics, motion, light, atmosphere)
• Experience integrating 2D FX seamlessly into a 2D animated pipeline
• Ability to balance creative intent with technical constraints
• Working knowledge of Flow Production Tracking (fka Shotgrid)
• Proficiency in Google Workspace (Mail, Calendar, Sheets, Docs) and Slack
• Strong problem-solving and technical troubleshooting skills
• Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple tasks under tight deadlines
• Strong communication and collaboration skills
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team
• Demonstrates initiative and adaptability to evolving tools and pipelines
• Ability to maintain confidentiality
