Job Description

The Character Layout Artist translates storyboards into detailed character layouts that define the staging, posing, and key actions of sequences. Their primary role is to establish the foundation for animation by ensuring characters are positioned correctly within the scene while maintaining consistency in proportions, perspective, and acting.  

Format: Hybrid/Onsite

Length of role: April 20th, 2026 - May 15th, 2026

Compensation: $1140 - 1450/wk CAD, commensurate with experience and skill level

Hours per week: 40

Reports to: Layout Supervisor, Animation Director, Supervising Director

*If the work for this position is performed within the geographical jurisdiction of the collective bargaining agreement, it will be covered by that agreement.

Knowledge, Skills and Required Abilities

  • Strong drawing and posing abilities with a solid understanding of anatomy and perspective.
  • Knowledge of animation principles and composition techniques.
  • Ability to interpret and enhance storyboard panels.
  • Familiarity with different animation styles and character designs.
  • Ability to work under tight deadlines while maintaining high artistic standards.
  • Proficiency in Adobe Animate.
  • Proficiency with Google Suite.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.
  • Maintain confidentiality over all matters and proprietary information.
  • Prioritize work to meet goals or deadlines. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Create detailed character layouts based on storyboards, ensuring proper composition and staging.
  • Define key poses, expressions, and proportions for characters while maintaining consistency with the project’s style.
  • Work collaboratively with animators and directors to establish clear visual storytelling. 
  • Ensure that characters interact naturally with backgrounds and props.
  • Maintain quality control over character proportions, perspective, and continuity throughout sequences.
  • Address feedback from supervisors and make necessary revisions.
  • Work within established production timelines and deadlines.
  • Other duties as required.

  • Be willing to put forth your best effort at all times during assigned workday. 
  • Maintain confidentiality of all financial, legal and proprietary  matters.
