Job Description
Are you ready to collaborate with our team to deliver high-quality, house-style illustrations and ensure timely revisions for seamless publication workflows?
Will you take the initiative to optimize our illustration processes and share your expertise by training colleagues and freelancers in our editorial standards and systems?
About our Team:
Elsevier and the communities we support expand the possibilities of human progress. The Lancet team within our STMJ division is committed to advancing global health through rigorous, impactful research and thoughtful discourse. We bring together a diverse group of experts to disseminate critical findings and insights that inform policy, shape clinical practice, and improve patient outcomes. Our dynamic and forward-thinking team is at the forefront of medical publishing, driving progress and inspiring innovation across the healthcare spectrum.
About the Role:
This position requires a candidate with extensive experience working on STM journals, who fully understands the demands of producing content for deadline-driven weekly publications. The successful individual must consistently deliver work that meets the highest standards of quality, speed, accuracy, and strict adherence to detailed house style guidelines.
Primarily focused on technical and scientific illustration, this role follows established style conventions and occasionally involves creative tasks, provided they remain within the bounds of house style. We are seeking someone capable of producing high-quality work from the outset; therefore, this is not a trainee position.
Candidates with backgrounds in graphic design, freehand illustration, or animation will not be suitable for this role.
Responsibilities:
- To redraw author-supplied material, including general diagrams, graphs, maps, CONSORT diagrams, charts, timelines, forest plots, and cellular/anatomical illustrations into house style, working to tight deadlines in order to ensure the on-time publication of content
- Carry out editorial/author revisions and corrections to illustrations in a timely and efficient manner whilst safeguarding in-house style and conventions
- Montage, resize, crop, retouch, and colour-correct photographs on a fast turnaround ad hoc daily basis
- Manage workflow using our content management system (WoodWing Studio) and in-house Editorial Management system
- Liaise with Illustration, Editorial and other Production staff as when appropriate
- Be proactive in formulating fast and innovative solutions regarding illustrations when required
- Training and advising other production personnel, freelancers, and editorial staff on house style and illustration policy
Requirements:
- Extensive skills in Adobe Illustrator in producing precise, accurate, and consistently high-quality work
- Excellent Adobe Photoshop skills and experience of photo retouching and colour-correction for 4-colour reproduction as well as preparing images for online use
- Knowledge of using Adobe Acrobat to convert and manipulate files
- Working knowledge of InDesign and Microsoft office
- Able to create complex illustrations from scratch using author-supplied files as source material
- Able to follow and interpret author and editor instructions and to be able to make changes to illustrations quickly and efficiently.
- Able to work well under pressure in a weekly/monthly publishing environment and to be able to adapt quickly to changing circumstances whilst handling multiple pieces of work
- Able to communicate effectively and work as part of a team as well as working on own initiative
